East

   .::.BreakDown.::.

   Hands down the toughest region in the field of 65. UNC, Georgetown and Texas are three of the hottest teams in the country right now and they all have a legit shot at winning the national title. The first round games don't look to be very exciting, but the 2nd round matchups are sexy.

   What stands out in this region is the abundance of veteran leadership. Roy Hibbert/Jeff Green (Georgetown), Jarrius Jackson (Texas Tech), Jared Dudley (Boston College), Derrick Low (WSU), Derrick Byars (Vandy), Carl Elliott (GW), Drew Neitzel (Michigan St.) and Reyshawn Terry (UNC). Experience can go a long way, especially in the NCAA tournament.

    You can call Tyler Hansbrough Jim Carey, because he's "The Mask."

    UNC
    The Tar Heels as deep, athletic and as talented as any team in the nation. After a two game slip-up in the last week of February, UNC returned to form winning the ACC title in three games, by an average of 13 points. It's hard to slow them down; it's hard to keep up with their speed. If Tyler Hansbrough is having an off game, they can rely on Ty Lawson. If Brandan Wright is in foul trouble, Reyshawn Terry is there to step in. You'll have a tough time pointing out their weaknesses, because they really don't have many.

       .::.Seeded Too High.::.

    USC
    The committee did a pretty good job with seeds in this region, so I'll make this brief. What has USC actually done to earn a 5 seed? Their non-conference strength of schedule was pathetic and their rpi is in the 40s, not to mention the Trojans lost to South Carolina and Arizona State. Okay, enough griping, I will say that 6'6 junior swingman Nick Young is a stud.

       .::.Seeded Too Low.::.

    Texas
    Once again the committee did a good job with seedings in this region, so I'm just going to post Kevin Durant's stats. Enjoy.

    Kevin Durant
    35.2 minutes per game
    25.1 points per game
    11.4 rebounds per game
    .429 3PT FG%

    Kevin Durant is pretty good at basketball.

    Texas
    They shouldn't really be a sleeper, but to anyone who doesn't have Texas getting to the Sweet 16: you are a fool. The Longhorns are playing their best basketball of the year and have played a lot of close games, so that experience should carry over to the tourney. Oh yeah and in case you didn't know:

    Kevin Durant
    35.2 minutes per game
    25.1 points per game
    11.4 rebounds per game
    .429 3PT FG%

       .::.Likely Upset.::.

    (11) George Washington over (6) Vanderbilt
    This has upset written all over it. Vanderbilt has lost to teams they shouldn't have (see: Wake Forest, Furman and Appy State) and outside of their win over Florida, Vandy hasn't really impressed me. GW senior guard Carl Elliott (13.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 4.9 apg) is one of the most underrated guards in the country and his backcourt partner isn't too shabby himself, in Maureerce Rice (16.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg). While I think that the Commodores are a better team, the Colonials will win this game.

       .::.Upset I Want to Pick.::.

    (11) George Washington over (6) Vanderbilt
    See above.

       .::.Upset You Want to Pick (but don't).::.

    (14) Oral Roberts over (3) Washington State
    It seems like Oral Roberts senior forward Caleb Green has been there for 8 years and in his time as a Golden Eagle, he's been one of the best players in the school's history. At 6'8, 255 he gives many teams matchup problems and he's a monster on the glass (9.3 rpg). Oh, I failed to mention he's top 15 in the nation in scoring (20.8 ppg) and has a nice complement in Ken Tutt (16.1 ppg), but outside the pair, the cupboard is bare. I'm scratching my head as to why everyone has Washington State going out so early; they've beaten Gonzaga, Arizona (x2), USC (x2), Stanford and San Diego State. Their lock-down defense will be sure to stop Green and Tutt.

       .::.Best 1st Round Match-up.::.

    (8) Marquette vs. (9) Michigan State
    I like Boston College-Texas Tech (who am I kidding I like all of the games), but the Marquette-Michigan State game is going to be a good one. Michigan State and Marquette own wins over Texas and Duke, respectively, but that was at the beginning of the year. Nevertheless, I'm not taking anything away from these teams. Both squads are led by their guard play and what a match-up we'll see between Drew Neitzel (18.1 ppg, 41.7% 3-pt fg%) vs. Dominic James (14.8 ppg, 5 apg); it's going to be exciting. Oh, and not to add any more fuel to the fire, but Tom Crean and Tom Izzo used to coach together for five seasons. Gotta love March.

       .::.Best 2nd Round Match-up.::.

    (2) Georgetown vs. (7) Boston College
    Hey fellas, remember each other? It wasn't that long ago you two teams were squaring up against each other at least 2 times per year in the Big East. While BC doesn't have as much of a frontcourt firepower G'Town has in the Green Hibbert tandem, the Eagles counter with senior Jared Dudley (19 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 3 apg) who is tough as nails and a very emotional leader. On top of that, Boston College's backcourt is better, hence we have a much better match-up than most people would think.

       .::.Best Storyline.::.

    New Mexico State
    Once upon a time he was roaming NBA arenas for 13 seasons, averaging 18.5 points per game. Then he served as Head Coach Bill Fuller for the TV show "Hang Time" (how hot was Mary-Beth Pepperton, huh?). Now Reggie Theus is back and he's playing the role as savior to the New Mexico State basketball program. Two years ago, the Aggies won just six games, now they're a 13 seed in the NCAA tournament. I'm sure Disney will pick up the story and make a movie into it; starring, none other than Reggie Theus.

       .::.Bottom Line the Regional Final will be.::.

    (1) UNC vs. (2) Georgetown
    As much as we all love upsets - for us diehard college basketball fans - we finally want to see a traditional 1 vs 2 match-up. And if there's a 1-2 game we would want to see it definitely has to be North Carolina and Georgetown. Both teams will get a scare or two, but they should be able to meet up in East Rutherford. If so, get ready for one of the most hyped Elite 8 games of all-time and a result that would live up to the billing. Both teams are way too good to not get to the Elite 8 ... even despite the East being the toughest region.
